DESCRIPTION:MCWL members\, the Earl Warren Inn of Court\, is inviting you to a unique program\, related to one of the most riveting chapters in  the history of the Bay Area: the kidnapping of Patty Hearst\, the rise of the Symbionese Liberation Army\, and the courtroom and legal battles that ensued. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please email Adam Carlson: carlson@cmslaw.com. \nThese events captivated the nation in the early 1970s\, became one of the first events to receive near–24-hour news coverage\, and introduced the public to what would later be known as Stockholm Syndrome. Was Patty Hearst\, an heiress to one of the wealthiest families in the state\, a willing participant in armed robberies? Or was she a victim? \nA distinguished member of the Earl Warren Inn of Court\, D. Lowell Jensen\, was the Alameda County District Attorney at the time and was the prosecutor in one of the major trials that arose from those events. Judge Jensen will be the anchor of the program\, recounting his unparalleled perspective from inside one of the most unique and shocking sagas in both the news and legal world. These events occurred 50 years ago\, and yet his memory of the courtroom aspects of these events is impeccable. \nThis program will be held in person in Oakland\, at the Wiley Manuel Courthouse\, with a social dinner to follow at Everett & Jones. DESCRIPTION:Please join MCWL for our annual Business and Professional Women’s Presentation\,\nwhich will be held as a lunchtime Zoom event this year. This year’s featured speaker will\nbe Joana Castro Simonini\, Managing Attorney at Canal Alliance.  Joana will be speaking\nabout Canal Alliance’s critical work breaking the cycle of poverty for Latino immigrants\nand their families in Marin\, including their immigration legal services for unaccompanied\nminors and other vulnerable groups\, as well as her own experiences as a woman and\nmother in the legal profession. \nWhile this is a free event\, we invite attendees to donate directly to Canal Alliance to\nsupport their critical work and services: https://canalalliance.org/get-involved/donate/ \nJoana earned her B.A. from the University of California\, Berkeley\, majoring in History\, in\n2002 and her J.D. from the University of California\, Hastings College of the Law in 2008.\nDuring law school\, she worked as an intern and clinical student at Canal Alliance focusing\non U Visa cases. She also worked as a fellow\, clinical student and later research assistant\nat the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies at Hastings where she gained extensive\nexperience in asylum law. After law school\, and prior to joining Canal Alliance\, Joana was\nan intern at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague\nand worked as a contract attorney for a private firm in Oakland\, gaining experience in\nremoval defense. Joana joined Canal Alliance in December 2014 to assist with the influx\nof unaccompanied minors at that time. She has represented children and youth before\nEOIR\, the asylum office and in their SIJS applications. As a staff attorney\, she also\nworked on U and T Visas cases\, VAWA\, Naturalization\, DACA\, Adjustment of Status and\nTPS applications\, family petitions and consular processing. Joana became Managing\nAttorney in 2017 and directly supervises the attorneys/DOJs and oversees the\ndepartment's legal and operational strategies. Born in Brazil\, Joana is a native Portuguese\nspeaker and is fluent in Spanish and English.
